10 Most Iconic Alien Planets In Modern Doctor Who

Mars is home to two distinct species in on-screen Doctor Who adventures - the Ice Warriors and the Flood.

In the revival series, the TARDIS first landed on the Red Planet in 2009's The Waters of Mars, where the Tenth Doctor met the inhabitants of Bowie Base One. On a mission to colonise Mars, the human astronauts soon began to suffer symptoms of an alien virus which possessed them and caused them to exude massive amounts of water.

Theorising that the Flood could have been imprisoned in the Ice Fields by the native Ice Warriors centuries before, the Doctor warned the humans not to touch the infected water - not one drop.

Realising that the deaths of the settlers was recorded history, the Doctor struggled with his morals and the laws of time. Ultimately, he chose to save the survivors with the TARDIS. The Base was detonated, trapping the Flood in the crater left behind.

Centuries earlier on the planet, the Twelfth Doctor met up with the Ice Warriors in 2017's Empress of Mars. Surprisingly - some Victorian soldiers were also on the Red Planet, trying to claim it for the British Empire. Having travelled to Mars with a captured Ice Warrior, the soldiers found themselves in the middle of a Martian hive where sleeping Ice Warriors lay waiting for their Empress' return.

Despite the Ice Warriors appearing prevalently throughout the Classic Series, this was the first time we had seen the Doctor encounter them on Mars. 1975's Pyramids of Mars saw the Fourth Doctor face Sutekh the Destroyer - an Osiran criminal - on the Red Planet, but not the Ice Warriors.

Intergalactic Travel Advice: Be warned - there's Life on Mars.
