8. Mountain Climbing Accident In The Space Age - First Flight

In the 22nd Century, mountaineering is still a dangerous sport. By the 23rd Century, anti-gravity boots had become standard issue, allowing Spock to hover beside Captain Kirk at El Capitan, yet there was no such gear available to poor A.G. Robinson in the episode First Flight.

He was posthumously introduced as a Starfleet rival of Captain Archer's, vying with the latter for command of the Warp 5 ship. However, when Archer won Enterprise, he remained on Earth, little knowing this was spelling his doom.

Robinson was killed in a mountaineering accident. This, sad to say, feels like an unlucky fate in a time where warp flight is now commonplace. Perhaps the man's own hubris played a part - were there no safety nets to be found? Perhaps there were but, like a certain captain almost one hundred years after him, he may have elected not to bother with them.

Though it was only Enterprise's second season at the time, this felt like an odd way to kill a man who, it was revealed, was such an important 'almost ran' in Starfleet history. We will remember you, Robinson - if not for your climbing prowess, then certainly for your inspiring actions toward Jonathan Archer.
