10 Most Messed Up Steven Universe Moments
3. Spinel Is Abandoned For 6,000 Years
Steven Universe: The Movie takes place 2 years after the events of the final episode of the original Steven Universe series.
Throughout the original series, the true nature of Steven's mom, Rose Quartz, was slowly revealed. The largest part being she was actually Pink Diamond. Steven also learned that his mom had a habit of running away from her responsibilities, misleading Gems who followed her, and other bad choices that ultimately fell onto Steven's shoulders to fix.
The Movie is no different. Though Steven has brought peace to the universe, ending the Diamond Authority's worlds destroying mission, a new threat appears in the skies above Beach City. A giant drill lands on the hill Steven and the Crystal Gems are on. Riding the drill is a derange Gem named Spinel who plans to destroy the earth and kill Steven.
Using a scythe weapon, she poofs the Crystal Gems and tries to poof Steven, but since he's half-human it has no effect. Steven wrestles the weapon from Spinel and poofs her, but realizes his powers are on the fritz. Waiting for the Gems to reform, Steven is shocked when one by one the Gems reappear, apparently reset to their factory settings. Including Spinel who doesn't remember bringing the drill and threatening to kill Steven.
The main plot of the film is Steven trying to return the memories of the Crystal Gems and discover the reason for Spinel's attack.
After returning the memories of Amethyst and Pearl, Spinel slowly remembers her past. She takes Steven to an abandoned, run-down garden in space. She explains it was the garden Pink Diamond and she used to play in. Then Pink was given earth to colonize.
Then Spinel sings possibly the saddest song in the entire series. Pink was getting sick of Spinel's desire to constantly play and in order to keep her from following to earth, Pink tells Spinel they're going to play a game. Spinel is to stand absolutely still until Pink comes back.
Spinel in her trusting way does just that... for 6,000 YEARS!
Steven says it best after Spinel's song ends:
I can't believe mom did that to you. Actually, I can totally believe it.
