10 Most Messed Up Steven Universe Moments
2. The Cluster
There are two kinds of Gems the Crystal Gems are concerned with in regards to their impact on the earth.
The first is Corrupted Gems, who are Gems who have... become corrupted. They take on the forms of monsters, becoming more animalistic in their actions and behaviors.
The second are Gem shards. Shattered Gems leave behind shards and the Crystal Gems collect them in hopes of one day fixing the Gems.
After the rebellion of the Crystal Gems versus Homeworld, the Diamonds believed earth to be a lost cause. Instead of continuing to harvest its resources, they began experimenting on the shards of those who fell during the rebellion. Shards were forced to fuse together.
These experiments are shown in the season 2 episode, "Keeping It Together," as strange amalgamations of limbs and pieces. But there's a moment when the Gem cluster tries to form and shapes of Gems are seen, screaming in pain. When Garnet realizes what the creatures are, she is so horrified she nearly un-fuses. To be fair, it would absolutely be terrifying seeing an entire body made of arms and hands crawling towards you like it jumped out of John Carpenter's "The Thing."
But the main plan was to create a giant geo-weapon, called The Cluster, capable of destroying the earth.
The Cluster itself is made up of millions of Gem shards, the true number of Gems unknown. But it's clear they were forced to fuse together, meaning millions of separate thoughts are constantly screaming out at the same time, longing to return to their whole forms.
The most terrifying thing? When The Cluster takes physical form as a giant arm that looks like a human arm without its skin. Gross.
