10 Most Re-Watchable Star Trek Episodes
3. In The Pale Moonlight
Some people often complain about how dark Star Trek has become with Discovery and Picard. There is merit to this: the optimism of early Star Trek has been somewhat thin on the ground in the more recent series. However, there is a little show that set the mould for these two shows and that is Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
More specifically, there is In The Pale Moonlight.
This is a budget saving, tight bottle episode. It also ranks as one of the greatest episodes of the entire franchise. Avery Brooks ABSOLUTELY delivers a home run here, dictating his secret captain's log - all while facing the camera and breaking the fourth wall, something Star Trek never does (and hasn't repeated since.)
This episode is dark. It's heavy. It shows what the weight of waging a war does to the good guys, breaking them down and pushing them into acts they might never have considered in 'normal times'. The episode also features the impossible-not-to-love Garak in one of his most significant appearances in the series, playing the smiling assistant to Sisko's reluctant architect.
They make a frighteningly good team, succeeding in the most daring mission that the captain has embarked on in his career. He may have commanded troops into battle - but conning an Empire into joining the war on the side of the Angels? This was a new high, or low, for Sisko.
In The Pale Moonlight is a stand out episode of the franchise, deserving a spot in any top 10 list that comes along.
