We all want to better ourselves and we all look up to certain people and yearn for a personality trait or two of theirs we find interesting. Throughout the entire series of Voyager, the Doctor continually strived to develop himself and he used many different methods to do so. Some worked and some didn't, and this entry is the most glaring example of what happened when it didn't work.

In this episode, the EMH attempts to include the personalities of historical figures he admires into his program, but it goes horribly wrong when the darker sides of their personalities begin to take over. This is the main plot of the episode, with the B plot centering on Kes pursuing a romantic relationship with an inhabitant of a planet Voyager is orbiting.

These two plots collide when the man Kes is spending time with is attacked and almost killed one night by a mysterious cloaked figure. It is later revealed that the mysterious figure was in fact the Doctor, under the influence of the evil persona that developed due to his previous attempts at improving himself.

It provides a twist that viewers don't see coming, as the Doctor has always been kind and his program prevents him from doing no harm under normal circumstances. However, when the dark side of the personalities arose, there was no limit to what the Doctor would do.
