This entry is one of the sadder twists Voyager ever provided and one that stuck with viewers long after the episode finished.

While on an away mission, Tuvok and B'Elanna are captured and imprisoned and Janeway is injured during an encounter with the Mokra security force. Janeway is rescued by an elderly man, Caylum, who is convinced she is his long lost daughter who has returned and he immediately wants to help her rescue B'Elanna and Tuvok. His reason; his wife is also being held in the same compound and he had tried and failed many times to rescue her.

They successfully gain access to the compound and free Tuvok and B'Elanna, but Janeway learns that Caylum's wife and daughter had been dead for years. This gut punch is amplified when Caylum is shot after attacking the commander and lays dying in Janeway's arms while she assures him that his daughter was actually alive and that his wife forgave him for the actions that landed her in prison.

This twist completely subverts the expectations of the audience that the story would end with not only Tuvok and B'Elanna being freed, but Caylum's wife too. The sweet reunion between the two was what audiences wanted to see, but the writers had other ideas. It's not the happy ending viewers hoped for, instead leaving them with tears in their eyes.
