The second story of fan-favourite Patrick Troughton’s Doctor, The Highlanders, apart from being an excellent historical set in 16th century Scotland, also features the introduction of companion Jamie McCrimmon.

Portrayed by Frazer Hines, Jamie became the longest serving on-screen companion, starring alongside Patrick Troughton in 113 episodes of the show. Unfortunately, both Jamie and many of his episodes faced a similar fate, as his character was returned to Earth with his memory of the Doctor and their travels together being completely erased, just like the tapes of 47 of his episodes.

At the request of Troughton and his young son Michael, The Highlanders was Doctor Who's last historical story containing no science fiction elements until Black Orchid in 1982.

First broadcast in late-1966, The Highlanders was unlucky enough to be in the season containing a large bulk of the show’s missing episodes, Season 4. The tapes of The Highlanders were wiped just two months after its original airing, leaving just a few short clips of episode 1 - coming in at under 20 seconds - existing in the archive.
