The fourth story overall in Doctor Who’s first ever season, and chronologically the first missing Doctor Who story, Marco Polo followed on from three highly ambitious stories featuring cavemen and the Daleks.

Marco Polo also laid the groundwork for one of the most popular formats of the show’s early years, the historical. The historical stories of this era mainly feature the TARDIS crew sent back in time to an important event or period in history and interacting with the key figures of the day.

In this case, the story takes place in 11th century Asia, with the Doctor meeting both Marco Polo and Kublai Khan, with Polo in this story even attempting to give away the TARDIS as a gift to Khan.

Although a popular serial that was sold by the BBC to television stations overseas, no copies of the serial are known to exist, with it being one of three serials to have no surviving clips from any episodes.

Marco Polo is well represented in photographic form, and several colour photographs taken on set survive and give us a highly detailed look at the costumes and layout of Doctor Who's first ever historical
