Mission To The Unknown is perhaps the most curious episode of the classic series of Doctor Who, as it is the only standalone episode of the normally serialised format of the show. Mission To The Unknown is also the first Doctor-lite episode of the show, with the Doctor, the TARDIS and companions Steven and Vicki absent from the story.

This episode was a standalone prequel for a future story with the Doctor’s most hated enemies, and was broadcast to a mixed reception in October 1965, with many viewers at the time confused by the lack of continuity with the next week's episode.

Because of its peculiar status, Mission To The Unknown has become one of the most legendary and sought-after missing episodes, since the tapes of the story were wiped by the BBC in July 1974.

This outing’s unique status eventually led to a remake of the episode being created by students at the University of Central Lancashire 54 years after the original airdate. This remake was officially endorsed and released by the BBC with several cast members from the original episode present at the creation of the do-over.
