10 Most Underrated TV Shows Of The Last 10 Years
7. Rectify
Premiering two years before Making a Murderer lit a fire under the true crime genre, Sundance's first original scripted drama focused on the fictional Daniel Holden who is released from prison after twenty years on death row. His homecoming is made difficult when law enforcement and the local townsfolk believe that Daniel is guilty of murder.
Rectify is a slow burn of a drama, patient and minimalist in the portrayal of the cruelties of the American prison system and of the difficulties in returning home. Some have compared it to The Wire, another smart crime drama which appears to be either "too good" or "too serious" for a wider audience.
It's likely this comparison has stopped the show attaining wider recognition outside the US. The understated tone and use of silence also contributes to how underappreciated it is. People like a lot of colour, style and noise in their television shows these days, just look at Peaky Blinders or how Marvel has edged into the prestige drama sphere.
Ray McKinnon's melancholic and meticulous treatment of trauma and forgiveness is much more refined by comparison and should not be drowned out by the more bombastic shows out there.
