10 Most Unexpected Doctor Who Moments

7. The Origins Of The Timeless Child

It was mentioned earlier so let's dive into it some more. Series 12's finale, The Timeless Children, really divided fans. Some love it. Some hate it. And some REALLY hate it.

Regardless of your opinion on it, no one can deny that they didn't predict who exactly the timeless child was- and this isn't about it being The Doctor, because that had become fairly obvious. Instead, let's focus on the origin story of the child and its connection to Gallifrey and the Time Lords.

It turns out that a Gallifreyan explorer discovered a child with the ability to regenerate endless times, and after much experimentation, was able to harness the power of regeneration for herself and her people, thus creating the Time Lords. The child's memories were then wiped and it grew up to become The Doctor.

It's a twist that is quite problematic, and is still to win over large parts of the fan-base. But put that aside, it's a moment that is is wholly unexpected. The origins of the Time Lords have always been shrouded in mystery and it was thought that it would stay that way. This revelation, for better or for worse, was very unexpected.
