10 Most Unexpected Doctor Who Moments

6. The Eleventh Doctor Dies

If the Doctor's regeneration in The Stolen Earth was unexpected, then Eleven's death in The Impossible Astronaut was mind-blowing.

Ahead of the Series 6 opener, it had been teased that a major character was going to die, but who? Could it be River Song? Again. Rory Williams? Again. Or Amy Pond? Again. But as it turned out, the unthinkable happened. It was The Doctor himself. Except this time, there was no regeneration.

After a mysterious figure in an astronaut suit kills The Doctor for good, fans were left reeling over this shocking moment, although they all knew deep down that there was no way the title character would stay dead for long.

Of course they were right and moments later a younger Doctor shows up unaware of his fate, and by the end of the series, The Doctor is still alive and well. Nevertheless, this was a truly unexpected plot point. Twists like these are usually saved for episodes towards the end of a series, so putting it at the beginning of the opener was such a fantastic way to catch everyone off-guard.
