10 Movies You Didn't Know Were Being Remade As Upcoming TV Shows
2. The Lord of the Rings
A show that could fix the Game of Thrones-shaped hole in the television world is Prime Video’s take on JRR Tolkien’s iconic novel, The Lord of the Rings.
After Peter Jackson’s popular, Oscar-winning interpretation of the novels released in the early 00s, this will instead be a prequel to the original story. It will instead be set during the Second Age of Middle-earth, telling new stories in the Lord of the Rings universe.
The show is set to be an enormous project, with production costs apparently costing up to $1 billion, making it the most expensive series ever made. Not only that, but there is apparently a five-season plan for the series, with a second season already in commission, shooting back-to-back with the first season.
It will be a risk that could really pay off for Prime Video, as although they have some critically acclaimed gems (like The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel), they are yet to achieve mainstream, hugely popular success, like Netflix and DisneyPlus have.
With its high production budget, large ensemble cast, and critically acclaimed source material, this could possibly be the next big fantasy show to gain huge hype and word-of-mouth.
