You might think that it would be difficult to make a dramedy about a bunch of teenagers who live the pediatric wing of a hospital due to a variety of serious illnesses, and not have it come off as majorly depressing. But Red Band Society, set to air on Fox this fall, looks like one of the most intriguing new shows we'll see in 2014. Adapted from a popular Catalan series Polseres Vermelles, it stars Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer as a nurse on the unit, and features a cast of fresh-faced young actors with varying degrees of experience. And despite the focus on teenagers, we're encouraged to see that Fox has elected not to pair this show with Glee, but rather air it alongside older-skewing shows. That lets us know that it should be a show that appeals to a wide range of ages, and not just the admittedly limited Glee demographic. There's no trailer out yet, but there's a lot to be optimistic about regarding Red Band Society. Although to be fair, audiences would be forgiven for waiting until the third season to star watching any show on Fox, considering their reputation for cancelling good shows prematurely.
