10 Plot Holes You Haven't Noticed In The Arrowverse

8. Felicity The Hypocrite

"Don't think of it as lying," Felicity Smoak told a torn Eddie Thawne - who was struggling to keep Barry's identity as the Scarlet Speedster a secret from Iris - during her time on The Flash, "Think of it as protecting her from getting hurt... with a fib." And, you know what, that captured the joyous and lovable essence of Felicity to perfection, reinforcing what kind of a hero she was.

A few months later, she discovered that Oliver Queen had a secret son from a one-night stand a decade beforehand and lost it. Finding out about William's existence when the young boy was kidnapped by Damien Darhk, she single-handedly made the whole thing about her, delaying the search for him so that she could berate her other half with endless monologues about how he lied to her. And sorry, how is this any different from the advice she gave Eddie over on The Flash?

First off, William's existence had nothing to do with Felicity whatsoever. If you really wanted to delve into the history, the person he lied to years ago was Laurel (with whom he was in a relationship at the time), not her. But more to the point, he promised William's mother that he would keep their son's existence a secret in order to protect him. And that's exactly what he did.

If we learned anything from this, it was that The Flash writers understood the original Felicity far better than the Arrow Season 4 writers did - because this self-obsessed monster they created (whose behaviour they even attempted to justify) went against the character that had been established. And it was one of the many moments in that season in which they turned their back on the established order.
