Star Trek: Picard took us on a thrilling ride, but let's be honest, it left Starfleet in a bit of a mess. The epic storytelling didn't just have consequences for Picard and company...the ramifications will surely be felt throughout the Federation.

The Romulans are due a comeback. The aftermath of the destruction of Romulus would almost certainly continue to impact the Romulans and Federation alike. Picard can't be the only officer who was disillusioned by Starfleet's actions, and the Romulans always did enjoy the dish that's best served cold.

The ban on synthetics might have been repealed, but after 14 years, a whole generation likely grew up believing they were the bogeyman. Mistrust that deep doesn't disappear after a couple of years. It clings, and in some people, it festers. As synthetic programs restart, rising tensions could be enough to cause serious fractures.

And then there's the horrific ordeal inflicted on the youngest members of Starfleet when they were assimilated by the Borg. That kind of generational trauma is not healed quickly; it requires patience and perseverance.

Janeway's wealth of experience makes her the perfect choice to start repairing some of the damage. Whether that's in the upper echelons of the fleet, guiding it through troubled waters with equal parts compassion and steel, or as a civilian, applying her trademark resourcefulness to scientific or humanitarian operations.

If we've learnt anything over the years, it's that no one can sort out a mess quite like Kathryn Janeway.
