10 Reasons To Revisit The Colin Baker Era Of Doctor Who
7. It Experimented With Post-Regeneration Trauma
The source of most of the controversy surrounding the sixth incarnation of the Doctor is the show's experimentation with post-regeneration trauma. This includes the most controversial scene in all of classic Doctor Who, in which a recently-regenerated Doctor strangles his companion Peri in a bout of confusion brought on by the regeneration.
For fans of the show at the time, the demeanour of the Doctor across his first season was incredibly shocking, as he frequently belittled Peri (and other characters in the show), a behaviour never-before-seen in the title character.
If you stick with it though - and for those willing to delve into the show's expanded media - the Sixth Doctor's personality gradually softens over his short run. The initial plan was for the Doctor to gradually soften up, and come to terms with his trauma over his tenure. However, this plan was abruptly axed when Colin was fired at the end of his second season.
Despite its premature ending, the arc of Six across his two seasons is incredibly satisfying to watch, as after the horrors of his debut, The Twin Dilemma, we eventually see a warmer and more tender Doctor by the end of his second season.
