4. Her Family Were Tortured
It's not unusual for the lives of loved ones to become entwined in the escapades of the Doctor's companions but for Martha's family this was taken to a whole new level in 2007. Not only were her Mum, Francine, and sister, Tish, used as pawns in the Master's far reaching ploy to capture the Doctor, they were also tortured by the renegade Time Lord aboard the Valiant and their mistreatment during The Year That Never Was was one of the defining factors in Martha's ultimate decision to bid farewell with the Tenth Doctor at the end of Series 3. She realised that she couldn't just leave them after what they'd been through and, seeing as she was basically completely to blame for their direct involvement in the drama in the first place, it would've been pretty heartless indeed for her to have just hopped back aboard the TARDIS for adventures anew. This is another reason why she is a companion to be admired. Unlike her predecessor Rose, Martha remained loyal to her family and never let her commitment to the Doctor get in the way of the ones who genuinely needed her back on Earth. She could have always joined the Doctor for a trip in the TARDIS and been dropped back at home five minutes after she'd left to help them recover, but that wasn't what it was about for Martha.
