3. She Was Hopelessly Devoted
Although Martha only served as the Doctor's full time companion for one series, she managed to firmly leave her mark on his life - and the show's mythology - along the way. If there's one thing you can call her, it's devoted. Hopelessly so, in fact. Throughout her initial adventures she made no secret of the fact that she had fallen in love with the Tenth Doctor and it was for this reason that she ultimately opted to leave the TARDIS behind at the end of her first series - but let's not get ahead of ourselves! Over the course of Series 3 she continued to exceed our expectations by continually going the extra mile to ensure the Doctor's unequivocal safety. One of the most notable examples of this (apart from the obvious which is coming up on the next page) is when she took on the role of the Doctor's maid whilst he was forced to disguise himself as the human John Smith in order to escape the Family of Blood. It would've been somewhat frustrating for her to have to go from companion to cleaner - and yet another kick in the teeth considering she was already feeling exceptionally undervalued - but she did what she had to do for the sake of the greater good. What's more, when they were sent back in time by the Weeping Angels, she even got a job in the shop to financially support them so no matter what situations came their way, Martha always had the Doctor's back. He returned the favour by dismissing her advances and constantly comparing her to his previous companion. He is an alien, though, so he wasn't just being cruel.
