While a number of examples have already been made on this list, it must be said that the introduction of The Mother is easily the highlight of the season.

It must have been one of the biggest challenges for the showrunners to get the casting of Tracy right, but Milloti nails it constantly with a level of playful charm, wit and occasional nerdness that mirrors Ted when interacting with the main characters, while her chemistry with Radnor is both heart-warming and heart-breaking at the same time.

Although she's only featured in the final season, by the end of it she truly feels like one of the gang, which makes her tragic death even more upsetting. When they got the casting this right, it's no wonder fans weren't pleased with a less than happy outcome for the characters.
