4. All Is Not Necessarily Lost For Saul
The opening six minutes of Uno show the audience a broken man, a man who can't even summon up enough enthusiasm for his comb over. Saul's Cinnabon prophecy came true, he's drinking heavily and watching his old commercials with the watery rueful eyes of a champion turned spectator. It could be a few months after he told Heisenberg "It's over", or it could be a few years. Regardless, Saul's in serious mental decline and lives in terror of paying the ultimate price for his ambition. But it seems unlikely that Better Call Saul will end how it began. Interviews with Odenkirk suggest viewers will eventually see if what has been shattered can be pieced back together. Gilligan has faith in Saul's ability to outwit the pack: "No matter what nuclear holocaust or plague may occur, this characters going to wind up scurrying out into the sunlight after everybody else is gone." It may prove impossible for Saul to truly rise again, but why would there be so much investment into a character who wouldnt even try to make a comeback? And perhaps it's not Saul's revival the writers are working towards - it could well be Jimmy's regeneration.
