10 Revived Doctor Who Episodes That Are Perfect For A Rainy Day

8. Boom Town

Going all the way back to 2005 as the countdown continues and this is one of the more 'filler' episodes of the Ninth Doctor's first and only series. Once again it's a story that is often overlooked but, as this list has already proven, it's usually these ones that have all the makings of a rainy day classic. If you haven't guessed already, the episode in question is Boom Town, or L'Explosion de Cardiff, as its French title goes. That's not important, but it's really fun to say. Originally entitled Dining With Monsters for reasons that (eventually) become clear, Boom Town is a 'calm before the storm' sort of thing, much like the aforementioned Fear Her, as it gently eases viewers into the catastrophic events of the series finale with a less intense adventure and one which generally doesn't take itself too seriously. Well, if you don't consider an alien adversary masquerading as the Mayor of Cardiff as part of a ploy to destroy the entire planet to be anything serious, that is. This one stands alone with plenty of drama in its own right, though, as Christopher Eccleston's incarnation of the titular Time Lord faces a moral dilemma when the TARDIS crew take a holiday to the Welsh capital. What could possibly go wrong? Well, quite a fair bit, as it turns out, because Annette Badland is back with a vengeance as Margaret Blaine the Slitheen (that's Blon Fel-Fotch Passameer-Day to you) and this time it's quite literally personal. The Doctor vows to take her back to her home planet for execution but first he has to look in the eye over dinner. What do you talk about with the person you're about to send to death? As awkward first dates go, this is the one to end them all.
