In its heyday, Red Dwarf was one of the best sitcoms ever produced by the BBC, but the breakup of writing team Doug Naylor and Rob Grant in the sixth season made a noticeable dent. The next two seasons paled in comparison, and then the crew attempted for years to make a movie out of it.

When that failed they made a revival series in 2009 called Back To Earth, which was a catastrophically unfunny meta comedy that only became a success thanks to eager fans. This led to a full series €“- dubbed Red Dwarf X -€“ being produced in 2012, and while it was a slight improvement on Back To Earth, it was still a lame retread of past glories.

The new series had a cheap and ugly visual look, and the actors were too old and harried to keep up with the energy the show needs to work.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
