While The Simpsons has somehow managed to stay on the air for twenty-seven seasons and counting -€“ despite running out of gags sometime around the eleventh €“- Matt Groening's other cartoon creation Futurama didn'€™t have the same legs. The show was an inventive blend of sci-fi and sitcom, following the adventures of a dim delivery boy who wakes up in the year 3000.

The writing and voice acting were top-notch, and the show quickly attracted a rabid fanbase thanks to the great characters. That wasn€™t enough to stop the axe from falling in season four, but the last episode served as a surprisingly touching ending. However, the show was brought back years later for some straight to DVD movies, which met with a mixed reception but were successful enough to bring the show back.

The revived show lacked the spark of the original run, relying on gross-out humour and the characters generally being awful to each other. There was the occasional decent joke or sight gag, but when the new series was also scrapped nobody really mourned.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
