10 Roles Doctor Who Actors Wish They'd Turned Down
2. Matt Smith - Lost River
Originally titled How to Catch a Monster, which should've been an area that Matt Smith excelled in. His fans had good reason to be excited when their beloved Eleventh Doctor was handpicked to star in Ryan Gosling's eagerly anticipated directorial debut and even the BBC were making a pretty big deal out of it, too. They released a video of Matt Smith thanking the Doctor Who fans from the film's set in Detroit (seemingly to affirm that he'd made the right decision by leaving the TARDIS after all) but that was in 2013 and so far all that's been seen of it is an undesirable trailer in which Matt's character, Bully, rides around town on the roof of a car and repeatedly asks us to look at his muscles. Great if you like that sort of thing, except nobody did. If that wasn't a suggestion as to how ridiculous the film's premise is, it wasn't even picked up for cinematic distribution after being unanimously panned upon its initial premiere at the 2014 Cannes Festival. They tried to make it sound more appealing by changing its name to Lost River but it was still booed by critics with one describing it as "dumbfoundingly poor". It's out on DVD in the spring, though, so you can check it out for yourself... if you dare.
