10 Saddest Doctor Who Moments

It's certainly a difficult task picking the saddest River Song exit. Some would say her death in Forest of the Dead was particularly tragic, or perhaps go for her bittersweet resolution in The Husbands of River Song. Both of them are definitely saddening moments, for sure, but the saddest farewell came during The Name of the Doctor.

This scene runs deep because of its personal meaning between River and the Eleventh Doctor. They'd grown a close bond throughout this tenure, clearly being where the bulk of their Timey-Wimey relationship took place.

We'd also seen how much the Eleventh Doctor cared for his new family, and how much it broke him when he was forced to say goodbye.

As River proclaimed, the Time Lord simply doesn't like endings, and to see River's echo following him around Trenzalore was heart-breaking for him. But, in the end, he was finally forced to face his pain and acknowledge her. It took a lot for him to do this, especially when it came to him finally accepting the end of their journey together.

This moment cemented their powerful relationship, and the tragedy imbedded at the heart of it all.
