10 Shocking Classic Doctor Who Era Cliffhangers

4. Invasion Of The Cybermen (The Invasion)

The 1960s was easily the golden age when it came to the Cybermen. All of their outings were impactful, and memorable, whilst also displaying the Cybermen as a genuine threat. The Invasion rounded off this era with style, granting them their biggest invasion attempt yet.

Though the cleverness of The Invasion is how the first half of this eight part serial doesn't even involve the Cybermen, instead concentrating on their insane human associate, Tobias Vaughn. But we're slowly spoon fed key information that alludes to their presence, and alliance with Tobias Vaughn, which results in a surprising cliff-hanger for Episode 4 when they finally show up.

However, the most shocking cliff-hanger of this tale was yet to come. The Cybermen had been planning their invasion carefully, using Tobias Vaughn to distribute their hypnotic technology into his technological products. Upon an activation signal, the world was brought to its knees, with every human sent into a trance. Meanwhile, a pre-prepared army of Cybermen rise from the sewers and march across the streets of London. Talk about a close victory.
