10 Shocking Deaths That Changed Game Of Thrones

5. Khal Drogo

HBO

Although their relationship didn't get off to the best of starts - I mean, Daenerys is essentially an object to be bought and Drogo actually rapes her (but that's fine because Thrones!) - the marriage of Drogo and Daenerys does blossom into something surprisingly sweet, and they develop a genuine affection for each other.

However, Drogo dies after suffering from an infection, which is made worse by the maegi Mirri Maz Duur, leaving him in a vegetative state so Daenerys smothers him to end his suffering. This changes things for Dany in a couple of ways. One, it leads to her losing part of the Khalasar, without which she cannot - at that point, at least - hope to conquer Westeros. And those that remain with her are killed later, and who knows if Daenerys would have went to Qarth if Drogo were still alive.

More importantly, though, it is Khal Drogo's funeral pyre she steps into, and from which she emerges with three baby dragons. The first dragons in the world for well over a century, Daenerys' means to ruling Westeros, and potentially the creatures that will come to save or destroy it, brought about thanks to the death of Drogo.
