1. Tricking Faith Into Revealing The Mayor’s Plans – Giles, Buffy, And Angel (Season 3, Episode 17)
The introduction of Faith Lehane is fundamental to the brilliance of Buffy’s third season. Faith is a powerful Slayer with a dark past and a dark personality, and though she initially teams up with the Scooby Gang, her loyalties start to sway as time goes on.
In Episode 17, Faith – who’s now working for the Mayor – forces Angel to transform into his evil alter ego (Angelus) by utilising the powers of the Shrouded Man, a mysterious shaman with magical abilities. Faith and Angelus then capture Buffy and chain her up.
After she’s goaded by Buffy, Faith starts talking about the Mayor’s Ascension and how the Scooby Gang are all going to die on Graduation Day. But unbeknown to Faith – and the audience, for that matter – this entire scenario is a hoax.
The Shrouded Man was actually working for Giles all along, and Angel was just pretending to be his evil alter ego. In one sweep, the gang discovered Faith’s true allegiance and obtained some vital information about the Mayor’s Ascension.
There are many smart moments throughout Buffy’s adventures, but this one is definitely the most impressive.
