Here's another factoid about Melody Angel. Eatha Kitt, famous to genre fans as the second Catwoman in Bat-Man, provided the visual inspiration for the character. In 1967, having a black female character in such an important role was an important step forwards. Rather less progressive was the decision for the 2005 series to make Melody Angel white. In addition, the overall role of the Angel squadron was diminished. On the other hand, Lieutenant Green was changed into a female character, so opportunities in the main ranks seemed a little more equal.
