10 Things Doctor Who Fans Can Thank Steven Moffat For
6. He Gave Us The Best Companion Origin Story Of The New Series
Every time a companion is introduced in the new series, there isn't much of a story. The Doctor meets a person and they're off. Lather, rinse, repeat. It's nothing to complain about per say - it's just something that has to happen every time the last companion leaves and a new one needs to be introduced. So it made it all the more special to see someone think outside the box (quite literally) and do something a little different. And in this case, that someone was Steven Moffat. Enter Amelia Pond, a little girl who dreams of seeing wonders beyond her imagination - something the post-regenerative Eleventh Doctor promises to give her when he happens to crash land in her back garden. The only catch is she has to wait five minutes for him to return for her, but she ultimately ends up waiting 12 years instead. You all know the story by now. By the time the Doctor does come back, Amelia has grown into Amy, a cynical young woman who forcefully repressed her wanderlust and imagination because the people around her couldn't accept it. But all of that changes when her raggedy man offers her the chance to see the universe once more. How could she resist? A mark of a good companion introduction is when it's more than just a story that has to be told to set up a status quo and that Amy's story all over. It's not just the story of how the Doctor met his new companion - it's the story of a little girl who waited to see the universe and finally got her wish. The story of Amelia Pond was a good one.
Once upon a time, Jon ended up in a huge dark room with a giant screen... and he never left.
