10 Things Doctor Who REALLY Wants You To Forget

9. The Doctor CAN Fix The Chameleon Circuit

We all know that the Doctor's TARDIS looks like a police box because the chameleon circuit broke down some time after the First Doctor landed in 1960s London.

Given that the Doctor was trying to avoid his own people until The War Games, it makes sense that the First and Second Doctors didn't pop back to Gallifreyan Kwik-Fit for an MOT and a spare chameleon circuit.

In Logopolis, the Fourth Doctor says that he never had time to ask for Romana's help in fixing the circuit. The Sixth Doctor then finally attempted to fix it himself in Attack of the Cybermen, but the TARDIS appeared to deliberately choose the most ostentatious disguises, like a floral cabinet.

So while the TARDIS resisted the change, Doctor Who has established that should the show want to, the Doctor can repair the chameleon circuit. But does the BBC want to? Not likely. Instead, we're all just meant to forget that repairs are possible.

In modern Who, it's been implied that the Doctor has grown to love the police box design and has no interest in fixing the chameleon circuit. Given how important the police box iconography is to the Doctor Who brand, it's clear that nobody behind the scenes has any interest either.
