10 Things New Star Trek TV Show Must Have
3. Villains and Aliens
The Original Series had the Klingons and Picard faced off against the Ferengi...oh...hang on...That's wrong.
Perhaps most important is to get that villain right from day one; strong, diverse and please don't get someone to write one of those humanising episodes like I, Borg or Hippocratic Oath for example. The Borg became the ultimate baddie and, sadly got overused in all the ensuing excitement from 1988 through to Voyager's conclusion in 2001, even managing a badly-played Regeneration in Enterprise.
A key villain can make or break a Star Trek show as was proved by the aforementioned Ferengi; kicking them down the ladder to comedy relief and bit players was a risky move that eventually paid off with Quark and Rom in Deep Space Nine. What about a random visit from Q perhaps to lighten the mood and play some havoc from time to time?
Minor villains could be from other parts of the franchise or just as new it might be worth a call to Michael Westmore to see if they can get shares in modelling plastic for the huge makeup task that this show will entail for the new races we'll be encountering. However, on that note it's worth thinking that CGI will be a bigger factor than it was even in Enterprise's day. Now more than a couple of species (Species 8472 for example) could be created in a computer. With this in mind, just think of the shapes and varieties of never-before-seen aliens which could come from the mind of the legendary Westmore. One thing's for certain it'll definitely be more than before.
