10 Things Non-Fans Don't Understand About Buffy The Vampire Slayer

5. When The Show Gets Dark, It Gets Really Dark

Buffy The Vampire Slayer
Mutant Enemy

When Buffy moved from the WB television network over to the UPN, the show became a lot darker.

The scene where Buffy is forced to crawl out of her own coffin during the opening two-partner of Season 6 is a nod to the dark path the characters are about to take. The remaining episodes feature gun violence, sexual assault, addiction, and a generally bleaker tone. Indeed, considering Buffy is meant to be a fantasy show, the really dark moments are rarely fantastical.

And whilst the last two seasons are certainly the darkest, there are some unsettling moments during the high-school years as well. Cannibalism, body snatchers, attempted suicide, and gruesome deaths all take place in the first three seasons.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer – despite its ridiculous name – is not a show for kids.
