10 Things RTD's Return WON'T Bring To Doctor Who

4. The Same Old Writers

Just because Russell is back, it doesn't mean that the same team of writers will be returning. Gareth Roberts has already asserted that he has no interest in returning to the show or the BBC, even if he was asked. Which he likely wouldn't be. What of other writers?

Steven Moffat has two or three projects currently in development and his departure still feels relatively recent. Similarly, the prolific Mark Gatiss stated his belief that Empress of Mars would likely be the last Doctor Who story he'd write. If he was to ever come back, it feels more likely that it would be as a showrunner.

So who will be writing on the new series? Perhaps a clue lies in BBC Director of Drama Piers Wenger's assertion that Russell will build on the extraordinary achievements of the Chibnall era? Will he keep on some of the great writers we've had over the past few years like Vinay Patel, Joy Wilkinson or Maxine Alderton?

Perhaps he'll be shepherding a new generation of writers who grew up with the show, or nurturing new talent as he did on his series Banana, which featured episodes by End of the F***ing World writer Charlie Covell.
