10 Things We Learned From The Star Trek Lower Decks Trailer
5. Resistance Is Futile
We get a shot of the Borg through the eyes (eye?) of Ensign Rutherford, an engineer who is adjusting to life with a new cyborg implant. He has been likened to Geordi, though does not yet have the technical know-how to fix every issue. He is keen to learn, and is working hard.
The Borg as depicted here seem to be part of a training program, most like aboard the holodeck of the Cerritos. They seem to be sticking closely to what has come before in terms of design. Star Trek: Picard introduced a slightly sleeker design to the Borg, moving away from the bionic-zombie designed introduced in Star Trek: First Contact.
The Borg have evolved since their first introduction in Q, Who? They were originally a complicated design, featuring many tubes and whirring parts. Then, with their return in First Contact, they were updated to have a somewhat scarier design (thank you for the movie budgets!). This design remained for their appearances in Voyager and Enterprise.
In Picard, they themselves do not have a hugely different appearance. In fact, it is the interior of the Borg Cube that changes the most. It has changed from a mechanical, steel mill design to something far closer to human habitation. It does rob the Cube of some of its fear factor - however, this is a minor complaint.
