The X-Files Revival: 10 Things We Learned From 'Founder's Mutation'

1. William Will Be A Very Big Part Of The Mythology Going Forward

In Founder's Mutation, the subject of William is addressed head on by Scully and Mulder when she asks him if he ever thought of the son she gave up for adoption. And of course, he does, but he has made himself move on. Mind you, neither have actually moved on, that much is clear. What's even clearer is that William will be a very big part of things moving forward. William was witnessed in, let's call them visions, several times in the episode. In one, Scully is taking him to his first day of school. Shortly after, she finds he has broken his arm, and rushes to his side, only to have things flash forward to an older William, who is seemingly becoming an alien. Then there's Mulder's vision at the end of the episode, which may have brought chills to longtime viewers: first, there is Mulder and William launching rockets in what might be their backyard. Then there's Mulder rushing to the aid of his screaming child, bursting into his room to find him floating mid-air, being abducted by aliens in a scene very close to the abduction of Mulder's sister. Since Mulder and Scully gave up William, these are not memories. Are they true visions of what William might have gone through, or what he is going through (perhaps with Scully and Mulder standing in for his adoptive parents)? Or are they simply shared guilt? Expect the show to revisit this in the coming weeks. For now, Founder's Mutation was a solid outing, and a marked improvement from My Struggle. Even better, next week's episode, Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Man, is being called an instant classic. What did you make of Founder's Mutation? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
