10 Things You Learn Rewatching Futurama

8. The Background Gags

Futurama is a hugely detailed show, one crammed full of background jokes that you need an eagle eye to spot. On the first few watches, you’re understandably going to be looking at the main plot in the foreground. On your third or fourth rewatch though, your eyes can drift a little more.

Once they do, you’ll notice so many details you’ve never spotted before.

Bender’s room number is the binary for ‘$’, several characters appear well before they’re actually introduced and several maths jokes are thrown in there. Studio 1(power 2)2(power 1)3(power 3) as a riff on Studio 54 is probably the most noticeable yet most complicated one.

Sometimes a joke starts as a little blink and you’ll miss it moment, but then gets folded into the main continuity. Bender being Mexican was once a one off joke, while the movies highlighted the long running satirisation of New York’s rat problem by having New New York infested with owls.

You could watch it ten times and still find new things; it’s just that detailed. Then there’s another major background detail worth looking out for too...
