10 Things You Learn Rewatching Futurama
6. Disenchantment Probably Still Deserves Your Attention
This might seem a little strange, to be talking about Disenchantment in a Futurama list, but with a bit of leeway it makes sense.
Matt Groening’s name was a blessing and a curse for Disenchantment. On one hand, it hauled in more viewers than a Netflix exclusive fantasy cartoon would usually get in its first season. On the other, it meant it was immediately compared to two of the best animated shows ever: Futurama and The Simpsons.
The comparison was especially unfair on Disenchantment as it wasn’t even trying to be like those shows. The art style and high concept both link it closer to Futurama, but unlike New New York, Dreamland was not a place of episodic adventures. Season One was one long story with some jokes thrown in there.
Unlike Futurama, it wasn’t crammed with references, riffs or gags. It was narrative at its heart.
Season One of Disenchantment is not as good as Season One of Futurama, so far as they are comparable. However, despite some bright spots, it’s clear Season One of Futurama sees it still finding its feet. If you’re on the fence about Disenchantment, give it another go. Chances are it’ll only get better from here.
