The White Walkers' weakness wasn't exactly hidden for too long in the grand scheme of the show. Season 3 showed Sam earning his slayer title with a dragonglass dagger saving his life and Gilly's as they attempted to flee.
A lot has happened since the event, yet it's staggering to think that word of the weakness is yet to spread a lot further than the Wall.
