10 Times Doctor Who Became The Weirdest Drama On TV

8. The Sun Makers

Tom Baker's Fourth Doctor was the ultimate bohemian, as likely to trip over his scarf as explain the concept of metaphysics. Whilst frequently contrasted with authority figures, he found himself trapped on a whole planet of them in satirical curio The Sun Makers. A tyrannical bureaucracy led to all manner of brain-bending escapades for the toothsome Time Lord. Peoples' faces appeared through holes in the wall and the execution method of choice was The Steamer, which housed its unfortunate victims inside a giant kettle. All strong and decidedly odd-tasting meat for the curly-haired crusader and his half-naked companion Leela. Not forgetting K-9 of course, the batty metal mutt whose nose cannon pointed at the ground, but which always managed to fire upwards! Pride of place on the weird scale was taken by the villain of the piece. The Collector (Henry Woolf) wasn't your typical Doctor Who enemy. He may have had an ominous name, but turned out to be a diminutive creation, not dissimilar to Donald Pleasence channelling squeaky comedian Joe Pasquale. In keeping with the unusual tone, the Doctor hatched a plan that could best be described as "innovative", reducing The Collector to the size of a pea and flushing him down inside his own bath chair!
