Christian Slater is of course a Hollywood star and was, at the time of his appearance, one of the biggest names that Star Trek attracted. Mary Slater was the casting director on Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country and also happened to be his mother, so he appeared in the film as the crewman who brings Captain Sulu the news that Starfleet is searching for the Enterprise.

In 1997, while high on alcohol and cocaine, he repeatedly struck his partner. He was arrested and charged with assault, to which he plead no contest. He was subsequently sentenced to 90 days of jail, though he ended up only serving 59. Following his sentence, he was ordered to attend rehab for three months, but this would not be the last time that he went up in front of a judge.

In 2005, he was detained after a woman accused him of assault. While again inebriated, he grabbed the buttocks of a lady passing him in the street. She then called the police, who charged him with third-degree assault. These charges were later dropped due to lack of evidence, on the condition that he remained out of trouble.
