10 Times Star Trek Refused To Give Fans What They Wanted
7. Not Making Voyager Struggle Enough
Star Trek: Voyager gave the Trek writers a unique opportunity to tell stories much darker than previous shows. Voyager was stranded thousands of lightyears from any allies with limited resources and crew. Under these conditions it's really quite surprising how well they fared on their journey.
Aside from specific episodes like Year Of Hell and The Void, Voyager was rarely ever struggling for resources. They almost always had a steady supply of food, weapons, and energy, they somehow never ran out of shuttles despite several blowing up, and a surprisingly low number of crew members were killed throughout the whole series. Even when facing off against the Borg, the crew had a couple of close calls, but always came out largely unscathed in the end.
Year Of Hell was originally pitched as a season-long storyline, in which Voyager would be constantly struggling and under attack by Annorax, but the studio didn't want another serialised show at the time because the creators wanted to stand out from Deep Space Nine. Still though, the fact that Voyager did so well in the Delta Quadrant was (and still is) one of the biggest criticisms that fans have about the show.
