10 Times Star Trek: The Next Generation Tried To Be Sexy
1. Fully Functional (“The Naked Now”)
In only its second outing, TNG announced to the world that things might get a little freaky now and then. And who better to fire such a broadside than the ship’s own Commander Data?
A debilitating illness has spread throughout the Enterprise, with symptoms including a kind of mania akin to severe drunkenness and a loss of inhibition. Crew members can’t help themselves as they laugh and cavort about in a manner that has led to dire results on other starships.
In the midst of all this merrymaking, Data finds Tasha Yar in her quarters. Overwhelmed by the illness, she tells Data about the tragedy of her youth in a failed colony. She says, “And now what I want is gentleness. And joy. And love. From you, Data.”
Tasha then suggestively asks Data if he is fully functional. Hesitant but somehow also affected by the illness, he replies, “I am programmed in multiple techniques, a broad variety of pleasuring.” They disappear behind Tasha’s bedroom door, and that’s that.
In the next scene, Data steps out of the turbolift and onto the bridge, wobbling but with a spring in his step. “At least you’re functioning,” Picard says. “Fully, Captain,” Data replies, grinning cheek to cheek.
