There is so much wrong with the finale of Matt Smith's tenure as The Doctor that fans are almost certain the writers were puffing anything they could get their hands on to make it through the workday. To start, the Silence being an evil religion set on destroying the Doctor was a weird turn, and one that took their mind-altering power from being incredibly frightening to being rather dopey. It is unlikely any fan is afraid of a priest, even one that has been genetically made to have you forget its existence. The Deus Ex Machina (or should that be Deus Ex Gallifrey) of the Timelords bestowing the Doctor with more regenerations was unnerving, and plays havoc with the lifespan of the Timelord - a piece of canon that had been thrown from writer to writer until Moffat, in a drug addled state, finally decided to make it infinite; which does somewhat limit the threat of any alien now that our favourite time traveller cannot die. Lastly, as the final source of the cracks in the world that have been plaguing Doctor Who for the past few seasons, it seemed like a disappointing ending to have them all swept under the rug by Clara popping up and commanding an entire species to let the Doctor live. That said, although it was a bit of a sucker punch for the audience, it was probably a really enjoyable night of drugs for the writers.
