10 Times The Walking Dead Traumatised Fans

2. Hershel's Death

The Walking Dead
AMC

Season 4 Episode 8: "Too Far Gone."

The brutal murder of Hershel Greene is the most sickening and jarring death in the early seasons of the show. A loving mentor figure to the group, Hershel never deserved such an excruciating exit.

In the season four mid-season finale, after having lost his reign and dignity, The Governor takes control of a new group and seeks revenge on the prison. Hershel is captured outside the gates of the prison and used as an example to our group.

With a new army and a tank in tow, The Governor towers over a helpless Hershel as our group watches on. After The Governor ignores Rick's pleas, he hacks away at Hershel's head with a katana, decapitating him.

Why is this traumatising? Because it's such a gut-wrenching death of a beloved character, and one that sets in motion the downfall of the prison.

This whole climatic episode is traumatising as our group's home is destroyed and they are forced to survivor individually out in the wild. But witnessing this vicious assassination of an endearing father has traumatised fans for many years.
