4. Dan Conner - Roseanne
It's tough to decide whether Roseanne fans were more pissed off or just downright gobsmacked when Roseanne's (Roseanne Barr) hubby Dan (John Goodman) was revealed to have died due to his season eight heart attack.
Originally, though, audiences were led to believe that Dan survived his scare, with the ninth season focused around the Conners winning the lottery.
The entire season is coloured with strange subplots and occurrences - including Dan having an affair - until the series finale reveals that the entire season was a fiction written by Roseanne, and that Dan did indeed die from his heart attack.
While some were happy that the season's wackier events were undone, it was seemingly at the cost of Dan's life, ensuring the show concluded with one of TV's all-time worst bummer endings.
The ending so soured fans on the show, in fact, that when it was finally revived in 2018, the decision was made to retcon Dan's death and bring him back to the land of the living.
In a bout of irony, though, Roseanne herself was soon enough killed off by an opiate overdose after the actress made a racist remark on Twitter, the show now continuing under the new branding The Conners with the rest of the family.
Given the nature of Barr's dismissal, though, fans were generally a lot less bothered by her exit than Dan's.
