10. Carol Peletier - The Walking Dead

Few characters experience the drastic change Carol has on The Walking Dead. Introduced to audiences as a meek mother of Sophia and battered wife to the despicable Ed, Carol rarely registers with the audience as a character. In fact, much of the first two seasons find Carol relegated to the background. Completely inert, her inaction and helplessness defined her existence to viewers for almost half of the show. It takes the death of Ed and Sophia in Seasons 1 and 2, respectively, for Peletier to shed her persona and become something new. The Carol we see after the time jump between Seasons 2 and 3 is a different woman. Self-assured, capable, and deadly, Carol has become a leader, a trusted voice and a contributor to the group. Her increased confidence and belief that hard decisions must be made (and that she is the woman to make them) led to her to shocking acts in Season 4, decisions that left viewers divided. Was Carol too far gone? That was certainly up for debate. Yet regardless of which side viewers came down on, they could recognise these were the actions of a new woman, a woman no longer relegated to the sidelines or disregarded. A woman that now defines her existence by action, and not cowering just out of shot.
