3. Dennis "Cutty" Wise - The Wire
Few characters on the critically-acclaimed HBO show The Wire experience significant personal growth. In fact, a macro point of the show seems to be people are who they are. It has always been like this, and it always will be. One of the few exceptions that proves the rule is Dennis Wise, or "Cutty". Viewers are first introduced to Cutty as he is released from prison after a 14 year sentence. His reputation as a killer, and a company man, is rewarded with an opportunity to resume his previous life of crime. But when Cutty has the chance to retaliate against a man who robbed him, he finds himself unable to pull the trigger. He decides to take low paying landscape work and invest his time and efforts into the community. Watching Cutty transform from a brutal killer to surrogate father and boxing coach for neighbourhood kids allows viewers a respite from the heavier story lines. It is a small breath of fresh air for viewers before they delve back into the darkness.
